Council Square
Piața Sfatului, also known as Council Square, serves as the central hub of Brasov's Old Town. This historic square has been the focal point of the city since medieval times, hosting weekly markets as early as 1364 (although it officially gained market rights in 1520). Dominating the square is the remarkable former Council House, originally constructed in the early 15th century but later rebuilt after a fire.
Today, it houses the Brașov County Museum of History. Surrounding the square are a collection of townhouses, predominantly from the 18th and 19th centuries, each possessing its own unique beauty. Notably, the square features a striking facade of a 19th-century Orthodox church, although the church itself is situated within the courtyard.
During the summer months, Council Square bustles with activity as people flock to its numerous cafes and restaurants, explore the captivating architecture, and partake in various events. For those seeking to immerse themselves in the essence of Brasov, both past and present, starting their sightseeing journey here is highly recommended.
Beth Israel Synagogue
Beth Israel Synagogue, located on Strada Poarta Schei, serves as the hub of the Jewish community in Brasov. Constructed in the early 20th century, it was considered more expensive than the renowned synagogue in Szeged, Hungary. Despite being damaged during World War 2, the synagogue remained standing and was repurposed as a gym.
Despite the small size of the post-war Jewish community in Brasov, they continued to uphold their traditions. In 1949, the synagogue was restored and its activities resumed. Recently, the building underwent another renovation and is now one of the most stunning structures in Brasov.
While the synagogue is open for visitors to explore, it is only accessible from Monday to Friday. However, even on weekends, one can still appreciate the beauty of the building from the outside.
The Schei district
The Schei district, located just outside the Old Town walls, holds historical significance in Brasov. In medieval times, it served as the residential area for non-Saxon citizens, as the walled part of the city was exclusively for Saxons. Throughout the centuries, the district expanded and became an integral part of Brasov's identity. Notably, it is home to Romania's first school, established in the 14th century.
Although the current building, which now houses a museum, was constructed in 1761. Adjacent to the school, visitors can explore the magnificent St. Nicholas Church, the country's first Orthodox church.
This architectural marvel showcases a captivating blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, adorned with breathtaking frescoes inside. While exploring the church grounds, one can also appreciate the vibrant murals on the cemetery walls and pay a visit to the cemetery itself.
