During our week-long stay in Ohrid, we found ourselves constantly entertained by the city's many attractions.
Whether we were lounging by the water, exploring the charming Old Town, or indulging in the local cuisine, there was never a dull moment. And with so many beautiful sights to see, including boardwalks, churches, and a towering fortress, we were able to fill our days with unforgettable experiences.
Tsar Samuel's Fortress
Tsar Samuel's Fortress, located at the highest point of Old Town Ohrid, is a renowned attraction that offers breathtaking views of Ohrid. This 10th century fortress, which underwent renovations in recent years, boasts impressive walls and watch towers that can be accessed via steep stairs. Depending on your vantage point, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Old Town, the lake, and more.
Although the interior of the fortress may be sparsely furnished, the unparalleled vistas make the 60 Denar (October '19) entrance fee well worth it. We recommend visiting the fortress early in the day to avoid the crowds and the scorching midday sun.
Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
Situated in the heart of the Old Town, encompassed by picturesque streets and hotels, lies the remarkable Ancient Theatre of Ohrid. This ancient structure, which traces its origins back to 200 BC, served not only as a venue for captivating performances but also witnessed gladiator battles.
Surprisingly, the theatre was not solely dedicated to entertainment, as it also became a site for executions carried out by both Romans and Christians. This dark history led to a general aversion towards the theatre, resulting in its abandonment.
However, in a stroke of luck, the theatre was accidentally discovered in the 1980s and can now be marvelled at in all its grandeur to this very day. The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid welcomes visitors without any admission fee, and its gates remain open throughout the week, allowing for unrestricted exploration and appreciation.
Old Bazaar
Ohrid's Old Bazaar is a bustling area that stretches from the main street to the waterfront. It is filled with various shops, small restaurants, and numerous ice cream shops, making it one of the liveliest places in Ohrid.
A leisurely walk through the bazaar is a must-do activity, whether you want to shop, indulge in some ice cream, or admire the beautiful mosques located around the area. The Old Bazaar is an unmissable spot when visiting Ohrid, and it is the perfect place to purchase souvenirs, including Ohrid's pearls, postcards, and magnets.
