How To Visit The Ċittadella or Citadel in Gozo of Victoria

Explore the Citadel, also known as Ċittadella, a magnificent Maltese stronghold that has protected the island since the late medieval era, located in the center of Victoria, Gozo.

The Citadel, which protected the resilient past of the island from savage pirates and Saracens, is a monument to Gozo's rich past.

Ċittadella: What Does It Mean?

The Maltese term for the Citadel is "Ic-Ċittadella," but it is also known by the name "Il-Kastell," both of which imply castle.

The stronghold is home to a stunning architectural tapestry that has been fashioned throughout millennia by several civilizations. Every stride mirrors the footsteps of those who impacted this Ċittadella.

I developed this comprehensive guide to cover all you need to know about the Ċittadella in Gozo, from how to get there to the best things to do in the surrounding region. I visited this magnificent sight while traveling around Gozo.

I'll also tell you about the amazing 360-degree panoramic view that I saw from one of the highest places on the island.

The Citadel: Where Is It?

Located precisely in the middle of Victoria, the capital city of Gozo (also known as Rabat), stands Citadel. As you pass the It-Tokk Market on the right, you'll see this walled village ascending.

I made the decision to rent a car in Malta before traveling to Gozo by ferry from Cirkewwa across the Gozo Channel. This was a fantastic method of traveling to Victoria and seeing the island.

However, there are lots of other methods to go to Victoria and visit the wonderful Ċittadella. I'll list the top choices below.

To ease your worries, one of the finest ways to get to the Citadel is to arrange an all-inclusive, hassle-free day excursion. If you are staying on the main island, I strongly suggest the Yippee Tours tour, which offers a convenient pick-up service and transportation back to Malta.

Tour Tips

Your driver will provide you with local information at every stop as they take you to the main locations on the island, including the Citadel, as part of the Gozo Tuk Tuk Tour.

Alternatively, you might opt for the well-liked self-drive Gozo Quad Bike Tour, in which you'll trail with a lead driver to a variety of breathtaking off-road destinations that are difficult to get to by automobile as well as well-liked beach spots.

Take a boat ride to Gozo to start your tour, where you'll see Comino and the Blue Lagoon. During your tour, you'll also savor a delicious traditional Gozitan meal paired with regional wine.

Rent A Car Tips

Check availability and compare costs with reputable internet comparison services like DiscoverCars for further exploration of Gozo. Driving in Gozo is quite simple, in my opinion. You can rent a car from the airport in Malta, travel to Ċirkewwa in the north, and then take the ferry to get to Gozo.

The most practical and roomy parking lot close to the Citadel is beside the main bus terminal and has lots of space for vehicles. The Citadel is within a quick ten-minute stroll from this free parking lot.

If this parking lot is full, you can also drive to the lot at the top of the hill, which is right outside the Citadel entrance. Parking here costs 2 euros, but the convenience makes the tiny fee worthwhile.

Information to Consider Before Traveling

Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is when admission is open.

Good Friday, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year's Eve and Day are always closed for business at The Citadel and the other locations.

When we arrived, we discovered that while youths (12–17), senior citizens (60+), and students only paid €3.50, adults (18+) had to pay €5.00. Kids (6–11) get in for just €2.50, while kids (1–5) go in free!

I recommend the Heritage Malta Citadella Combo ticket, which grants you entrance to the Old Prison, the Gozo Nature Museum, the Gran Castello Historic House, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, and the Citadel Visitors Center.
