Immerse yourself in the beauty of Africa's tropical forests as you embark on a hike to witness the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

You can embark on gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo at any time of the year. However, the ideal time to go gorilla trekking is from June to September and December. During these months, the parks are drier, and there is less rainfall, making it easier to hike and spot the gorillas.

In Bwindi, the average temperature in the morning is 11°C/52°F, while in the afternoon, it is 23°C/73°F.

There are two sections in Uganda where you can go on gorilla safaris: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In total, there are 18 gorilla groups or families, but you can only track one group per day.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is particularly special because it is home to 17 gorilla groups, making it the best place to see gorillas in their natural habitat. When you go on Bwindi tours, you also have the opportunity to encounter 90 different mammal species and 11 primate species, including the black and white colobus monkey.

Get ready to wake up early on the day of your trek and head to the briefing point by 7:30 am. You'll be assigned a tracking route with a group of 8 tourists and accompanied by guides and rangers as you venture into the forest in search of gorillas.

Along the way, keep an eye out for various species of monkeys, butterflies, and mammals. Be prepared for a challenging trek that requires a good level of fitness, and expect to get muddy and sweaty by the end of the day.

When you finally encounter the gorillas, feel free to snap some photos with your camera or iPhone, but avoid using flash as it may provoke them. Spend up to an hour in the company of these gentle giants for a truly unforgettable experience. After the trek, you can either head back to your accommodation or opt for a cultural village experience with the Batwa pygmies.
