Jardín
Jardín, a charming town located a few hours south of Medellín, boasts stunning colonial architecture, picturesque landscapes, and a plethora of activities to engage in. During my visit to Jardín, I had the pleasure of staying at Castro of Creo Ecolodge, where I received numerous recommendations from the host on how to make the most of my time in town.
One of the suggested activities was to embark on a tour of the enchanting Cueva del Esplendor, also known as the Cave of Splendor, where a magnificent waterfall awaits. Alternatively, one could opt to visit a nearby coffee farm and delve into the fascinating process of Colombian coffee production.
Among the various coffee establishments, Cafe Historias stood out as my personal favorite, offering an exceptional coffee experience that left a lasting impression on my taste buds.
Cocora Valley
Cocora Valley, located west of Bogota, is renowned as one of Colombia's top hiking destinations. Whether you opt for a day trip from Salento or embark on a multi-day adventure, this valley offers an unforgettable experience.
For those who wish to immerse themselves in the beauty of the night sky, campsites are available for overnight stays. The valley is particularly famous for its towering palm trees, reaching heights of over 195 feet and boasting lifespans of up to 200 years.
The lush green hues of the hills create a mesmerizing sight, almost appearing oversaturated. To capture the most breathtaking views, Castro highly recommends visiting during the "golden hour" in the early morning or late afternoon.
The Rock of Guatapé
Guatapé, situated in the northern region of Colombia, lies to the east of Medellín. Renowned for its prominent attraction, The Rock of Guatapé, this site can be accessed by ascending over 740 steps.
Upon reaching the summit, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic vistas of the town and the various islands scattered across Guatapé Lake. Conveniently, the town can be reached within a bus journey of less than two hours from Medellín, rendering it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway.
